*Bring your own tube

Ryan and I had a half day to chase some fish last weekend, so instead of loading up the yaks we inflated some booze tubes and blazed a fresh trail to some backwater not far from town. With only a fly rod and a float tube in hand we hiked down a train track, under a bridge and down a steep rock bank to the creekside. We found a few fish, including my personal best catch on the fly, but we ultimately failed in the attempt to record one eating on camera. Next time.

We landed several Largemouth and Guadalupe Bass throughout the day, mostly little guys with the exception of this one. It's my best catch on the fly and I watched the whole thing happen from about ten feet away! I made a short roll cast to the edge of a piece of brush. As the streamer sank slowly, I saw a dark figure emerge from underneath the cover. A couple of quick strips brought the fish out into the sunlight and a final tug triggered her to into a predatory strike. A short fight proceeded but the current stymied her progress and I was able to land her without incident. A few quick photos and she was released to see another day.

Big League Chew was the bait of choice.
